Water purifiers are an essential part of almost every family in our country. We know how important it is to drink safe water. Thus we rush to the market to get the best purifier and get trapped by the marketing techniques of the popular brands. They claim to serve us safe water but focus on selling their product by giving irrelevant information.
So let us see how you can choose the best purifier for your family.
Don't rush after brand names
First and the foremost information is that do not buy a purifier just by its brand name. Rather focus on the water purification technology. Do not get mesmerized by the advertisement, understand thoroughly then purchase.
-
Only 3 stages are required for water purification
Does your purifier demands to purify your water with 7 stages, 14 stages and so on blah blah. Kindly note three stages are sufficient to remove impurities from water. It requires 1. a good and bigger sediment filter, 2. good quality and quantity of carbon filter 3. a good membrane (RO/UF).
Consider the three facts below while buying any purifier.
Consider the three facts below while buying any purifier.
- Confirm from your seller if the purifier has a bigger and sealed sediment filter.
- Secondly, the carbon filter must not be compact, a good quantity of carbon must be present in it.
- Lastly, a good membrane that is either an RO or UF membrane. Do not mix up these technologies together. You can better go for RO+UV or UF+UV.
Do not buy until you understand the technology
You will come across terms like TDS, RO, RO+, UF, UV when you will look for a water purifier. It is extremely important for you to know about these technologies beforehand.
Beware of the fact that most companies and their salesman try to sell you an expensive item by proving you irrelevant information.
The lesser the TDS the better it goes: this is absolutely WRONG
TDS is Total Dissolved Solids in drinking water. Remember TDS is not any 'impurity' of water. Most companies try to sell their water purifier by proving the fact that TDS is an impurity. Though the true fact is that TDS is the presence of minerals such as Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium etc present in water. As per WHO and BIS (Bureau of Indian Standard) up to 500 TDS of water is safe for drinking. Minerals need to be filtered only when they are excessively high in water.
RO technology removes minerals from water
It is widely known that sailors do not carry water with them on the sea. They use RO filters to purify the water. Reverse osmosis (RO) technology uses a semipermeable membrane to remove ions, molecules, and minerals from drinking water. After minerals are removed from water it becomes sweet to taste. So if your water is already sweet you may not need an RO purifier. In this way, your drinking water will lose essential and useful minerals from drinking water. As I have mentioned earlier, up to 500 ppm of TDS is safe to drink.
When should you choose Ultrafiltration (UF) method
Ultrafiltration method uses hollow fiber membrane, that separates the suspended solids, virus, bacteria, protein, silica and several other pathogens from the water. The germs are killed and their bodies are removed completely in this filtration process, thus it is beneficial in comparison to UV method. The UF membrane has bigger pores as compared to RO membrane, hence it cannot remove dissolved minerals from water. These type of filters are best to use where the water is provided by the municipal corporation. As the water supplied is already filtered through several processes, thus it is not needed to remove minerals by RO filtration.
- Please note if you have an RO purifier it will do the work of UF as well.
UV filtration
UV method uses the ultraviolet ray to kill germs from the water. As mentioned earlier the bodies of the germs are only killed but their bodies are not removed in this process. If your purifier has UV technology make sure the UV chamber is made of stainless steel. Also, check if there is an indicator that shows the UV is working inside. UV systems are often grouped with RO to make a better water purifier.
Hence to conclude if your water source is tap water, groundwater, well water, pond or river water the best is to buy an RO water purifier.
Secondly, if your drinking water is provided by the government, UF filters are best for you. As it is filtered before it is supplied.
